The lordship of the houses is reckoned from the placement of signs in a particular house. The lord of the sign placed in a particular house is called the lord of the house. The counting of houses is done in an anti clockwise direction.

Classifications

In general houses are classified into four categories:

  • Kendra: the angular houses, that is the first, fourth, seventh and tenth houses. These are very strong houses for grahas to occupy.
  • Trikona: the houses forming a triangle within the chart with the first house, about 120 degrees apart from one another, that is the first, fifth and ninth. These are the most auspicious houses.
  • Dusthana: the less fortunate houses which tend to rule unhappy areas. These houses make no clear geometric connection to the Lagna. Dusthanas include the sixth, eighth and twelfth houses.
  • Upachaya: "growth" or "remedial" houses, where malefic planets tend to improve, include the third, sixth, tenth and eleventh houses.

Houses and the Elements

Houses relate to the elements, like the signs, but this is a secondary factor. Yet a fiery planet in a fiery house will receive some boost thereby. Many planets in the twelfth, for example, can be found in the charts of those who drawn.

  • Houses 1, 5, 9, like Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, represent fire. Fiery houses are dharma houses and relate to the kshatriya or warrior temperament.
  • Houses 2, 6, 10, like Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, represent earth. Earthy houses are artha or wealth houses and relate to the vaishya or merchant temperament.
  • Houses 3, 7, 11, like Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, represent air. Air houses are karma or desire houses and relate to the shudra or servant temperament.
  • Houses 4, 8, 12, like Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, represent water. Water houses are moksha or liberation houses and relate to the brahmin or spiritual temperament.
